About ACOAM

Most communities in Massachusetts were rural towns or blue collar textile cities until the early 1970’s. Until that time, local government placed very little emphasis or resources on the care and control of domestic pets unless the issue concerned rabies or damage to livestock by stray dogs. Those who worked as the local Dogcatcher or Dog Warden received little or no pay, little or no training, and little or no respect from the community.

The suburbanization of the region over the last half century brought major changes in the attitudes and needs of the residents of Massachusetts regarding the care and keeping of domestic animals. More households keep pets than ever before, and cats are now the most popular companion animal in the country. With the human population rising, and the pet owning population rising as well, confrontations and complications are inevitable.

The Animal Control Officers’ Association of Massachusetts (ACOAM) was formed in 1980 by people who were struggling individually with serious issues that affected their profession that were, and still are, better addressed by a group. Through the years ACOAM has grown into an organization with the lobbying and educational power needed to be recognized at the local, State and National level as a valuable source of information and advice on topics related to the Animal Care and Control profession.

Welcome to the official ACOAM website. We hope you will visit this growing resource often and offer your opinion and suggestions on improving this website and this organization. ACOAM is at your service!
